In partnership with several companies in the energy sector, HEC Montréal has created the Chair in Energy Sector Management, in December 2013. This is the first North American Chair in a Francophone school of management to address issues related to the sustainable management of energy resources. Through its research, training and collaborations, the Chair will examine the roles, complementary nature and evolution of various energy sources, all within a context of sustainable development.

Mission

The Chair in Energy Sector Management is dedicated to advancing knowledge relating to energy issues, with the goal of optimizing energy systems and ensuring that we have adequate energy sources to meet our society’s needs.

Primary areas of research

The Chair in Energy Sector Management aims to develop an expertise in the effective management of energy resources through the publication of publish scientific articles and thematic reference documents, and organizing symposia as well as seminars. The Chair will also provide students and professionals with specialized training and courses in the field of energy. The Chair will actively contribute to public debate on energy systems, by givieng lectures, commenting in the media and adapting scientific topics for lay audiences.

The Chair will focus on three main themes:

  1. Understanding energy systems and global issues;
  2. Studying the dynamics of the transportation, building and industry sectors, all of which account for a significant proportion of global energy consumption;
  3. Studying the organization and regulation of the different energy sectors. Researchers will examine the way governments, business and civil society shape trends in energy pricing and government regulation.
