Description : Freight transport is one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise due to its significant growth in the last 20 years and dependence on fossil fuels. Alternative fuels such as natural gas may contribute to lowering GHG emissions in the sector – however, the estimated amount of GHG reductions can vary based on how such reduction is assessed (i.e., point of consumption or well-to-wheel), as well as on which assumptions are factored into the analysis. Both Canada and US Governments use different models for assessing GHGs from fuel and vehicles technologies, despite having very integrated oil and gas markets. The model GREET is used in the US, while GHGenius is used in Canada. This webinar will present an overview of both life cycle analysis (LCA) models, as well as key assumptions and limitations when performing LCA simulations of alternative transportation fuels and vehicle technologies in the freight sector.
